Jair Bolsonaro would condition the permanence of Brazil within the Paris Agreement. For the future Brazilian president, continuing in this pact would depend to respecting the territorial sovereignty of the Government of Brazil. On the other hand, there is still uncertainty regarding the fight against illegal logging and mafias in the Amazon.

Servindi, October 31st, 2018.- After having spent much of the election campaign threatening to withdraw Brazil from the Paris Agreement, the now elected president of this country has decided to fettle his position on the environmental pact. According to Jair Bolsonaro, his administration would keep Brazil in the agreement if it does not affect the sovereignty they have over the Amazon.
This concern emerges due to the regional initiative of former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos who plans to create a broad area of environmental protection. This area between the Andes, the Amazon and the Atlantic - known as triple A - would imply creating intangible spaces such as natural parks, indigenous reserves and protecting other territories with elevated levels of biodiversity.
"With this Paris Agreement, would we risk having to cede our Amazon? If it is written that the triple A nor the independence of any indigenous land is not at stake, I maintain the Paris Agreement," pointed out Bolsonaro, who said he feared that under that pact that territory would be dominated by other countries.
Also, one of the main advisers to Jair Bolsonaro in the field of agriculture and environment, Nabhan Garcia said that in the interest of several civil and political sectors to remain in the Paris Agreement, any decision on this issue should be discussed in the next administration.
Amazon in dispute
During a political dispute over the future of the Amazon, the current Brazilian government, headed by Michel Temer, this week sent military troops as part of the struggle against deforestation. The Ministry of the Environment, Edson Duarte made this decision with the aim of appeasing the advance of illegal logging groups and land speculators in the state reserves of Pará.
"The teams remain on the ground and will continue with the operation to combat logging," said Minister Edson Duarte in a scenario in which deforested Amazon territory has increased by 36% in recent months.
Struggling in the state of Pará, in recent months groups of unidentified people have attacked the Chico Mendes Institute for the Conservation of Biodiversity (ICMBio). This entity is responsible for conducting environmental control in natural protected areas that are threatened by human activity.
However, the future of the Amazon will be in debate before the proposals to support the extractive activities carried out by the future Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. What will be the fate of the Brazilian Amazon during the next years?
