Europe promotes its energy renewal

European authorities discuss how to comply their goals of increasing renewable energy sources. It is estimated that by 2020 Eolic energy production will have increased by 52%, while the European Commission agreed to support the Natura 2000 Network project.

Servindi, September 24, 2018.- 2018 is becoming one of the most important years in the field of negotiations for the renewal of energy matrices. In addition to the meetings held in recent months in Bangkok, Canada and the COP24 in Katowice (Poland), the European Union is promoting meetings to define its own energy future.

Last week the members of the European Commission (EC) and the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) met in Brussels to define how to fulfill the goals of renewable energy. The meeting, part of the Technical Platform for Environmental Cooperation, included in its agenda the discussions on how Europe will seek to comply with the goals of the Paris Agreement on emissions.

In this forum, the recommendations were collected in addition to the members of the CoR, a committee that represents the cities and regions of Europe. Proposals were also raised to feed the Natura 2000 network project, a continental initiative that seeks to protect species and habitats in Europe.

"I think that in the case of renewable energies, regardless of the national framework, we have the capacity to progress faster and more efficiently," said Roby Biwer, representative of CoR of the town of Bettembourg (Luxembourg).

Renew sources

One of the conclusions reached by this forum was to promote the construction of alternative energy generation platforms with social actions. Specifically, it is wind energy that is expected to increase responsibly because there are some areas where energy generating mills have affected some ecosystems.

However, wind energy is still emerging as the future source of power generation in this continent. This was shown by a prediction made by the European Wind Energy Association (WindEurope) that has indicated that by 2020 the consumption of this type of energy will increase up to 52% across the continent.

At present, wind farms in Europe only feed 1.5% of the total energy demanded by the continent. This is reflected through the production of 17 thousand megawatts, however, it is estimated that by 2020 the production will be 26 thousand megawatts, most of which are generated off the coast of Norway, this being the country that most Wind energy contributes to European territory.
