Servindi, 20 June, 2018.- This week the United States Government under Donald Trump has written another milestone in his undemocratic profile. This after the White House announced its withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council, a forum that also qualified as "hypocritical".

"We took this step because our commitment does not allow us to continue being part of a hypocritical and self-centered organization that makes a mockery of human rights," declared the United States ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley. Thereby the North American country accumulates a new contempt towards a multilateral organization such as the United Nations.

In her argument, the American diplomat accuses the UN Human Rights Council of hypocrisy for accepting nations such as China, Venezuela, Cuba or the Congo that according to Haley do not respect human rights. While she accused the forum of having a strong prejudice towards Israel.

Since the creation of the UN Human Rights Council, it is the first time that an active member has decided to withdraw. One of the main demands of the United States to this forum a year ago was the elimination of point 7 of its agenda aimed exclusively at addressing the human rights violations perpetrated by Israel, a demand that was not addressed by the other members.

Antihumanitarian policies

The United States announcement comes after the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights denounced the fact that in that country hundreds of immigrant children are being separated from their parents. As is known, the Donald Trump administration has for several months initiated a deportation policy on the southern border of the United States.

In reaction to this announcement by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nikki Haley affirmed that "neither United Nations nor anyone else is going to dictate how the United States defends its borders."

"Once again, the United Nations shows its hypocrisy by pointing to the United States while ignoring the reprehensible human rights record of several members of its own Human Rights Council," the US diplomat said.

In response to the announcement of the United States, the president of the Human Rights Council of the UN, Vojislav Suc lamented the news and asked the other members to stay united.
