Servindi, January 16, 2018. - On January 18, on the eve of the arrival of Pope Francis in Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios, the main indigenous Amazonian leaders will hold a meeting to wait for the Pope’s arrival in this city.
In that meeting an announcement will be made regarding the position of the Amazonian indigenous peoples before the visit of the Catholic leader.
The Native Federation of the Madre de Dios River and Tributaries (FENAMAD), the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (AIDESEP) and the Coordinator of the Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin [3] (COICA) will gather at his event.
Thus, from the regional level (FENAMAD), national (AIDESEP) and international (COICA) the main concerns of these peoples will be announced.
It should be noted that Madre de Dios is one of the regions most devastated by mining, deforestation among other violations that affect indigenous peoples and nature, but it is also a sample of what is happening in other Amazonian territories.
This announcement will take place during the press conference to be held in the Andrew Gray auditorium of FENAMAD, in Puerto Maldonado, at 9 and 30 in the morning.
FENAMAD celebrates its anniversary
It is worth mentioning that this space is part of an activity day celebrating the 36th anniversary of FENAMAD, on January 18, and coincides with the eve of the Pope’s visit.
"We see him [Pope Francis] as an ally that will make our problems more visible," said Julio Cusurichi, president of FENAMAD, regarding the arrival of Pope Francis.
Las actividades por el aniversario de la FENAMAD se realizarán tanto el 18 como el 19 de enero y comprende almuerzo de confraternidad, campeonato de fulbito, entrega de reconocimiento a las comunidades nativas Tshirerishi (Maizal) y Sarigeminikee (Cacaotal), danzas típicas, entre otras.
The FENAMAD anniversary activities will take place on January 18 and 19 and will include a fellowship lunch, a soccer championship, awarding recognition to the native communities Tshirerishi (Maizal) and Sarigeminikee (Cacaotal), typical dances, among others.
It is important to bear in mind that FENAMAD is the most important organization representing the indigenous peoples of Madre de Dios, being the parent organization of the indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Amazon southeastern region.
As a regional organization, it is affiliated with AIDESEP at national level, which is part of COICA.

The press conference will be at 9:30 in the morning in the FENAMAD auditorium, located on Av. 26 de Diciembre 276, Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios.
