Greenpeace and WWF demand effectiveness to the COP24

For these environmental organizations, the summit that has just begun in Poland will be crucial for the definition of global policies against climate change. Between the most important points in the agenda is setting the limit of global warming in 1,5 ° Celsius, a theme that will be debated in the next days in Katowice.

Servindi, December 3rd, 2018.- On the eve of the start of the Conference of the Parties (COP24) to be held in Katowice (Poland) two of the largest civil associations dedicated to the fight against climate change issued statements on this event. Greenpeace and the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) emphasized the urgent condition of the global environment.

"We are heading faster and faster to a situation in which all people lose unless we act now. People are already suffering the impacts of climate change. This is the harsh reality that leaders must face at COP24," Greenpeace said in a statement.

For this environmental organization founded in Canada, the political sector must make immediate and aggressive decisions regarding the reduction of emissions. "Only through a quick and bold change can we alter the course of history," Greenpeace delegate for COP24, Jens Mattias Clausen, said from Katowice.

Among the specific and immediate actions to be taken, Greenpeace proposes the closure of nuclear power plants. They also highlighted the need to establish 1.5 ° Celsius maximum global warming goal as proposed by the international scientific community, a topic that will be discussed and, hopefully, will be defined in the coming days during the summit.

WWF supports the Paris Agreement

WWF's global climate and energy program director, Manuel Pulgar Vidal, showed a similar position, and he hopes that progress will be made in the debate on the implementation of the Paris Agreement, one of the main points on the COP24 agenda. Like the Greenpeace representative, the WWF representative also emphasized the goal of global warming.

"We must ensure that we live up to the expectations surrounding this round of negotiations. Without ambitious climatic actions, it will be practically impossible to avoid exceeding the 1.5ºC increase in global temperature," said the former Environment Minister of Peru.

Both organizations, defenders of the Paris Agreement and its implementation, have highlighted the importance of COP24 2018, an event that could mark the path of policies to combat climate change into the future. However, with more than one ruler threatening to withdraw from the pact, the Paris Agreement still has much to fight for at this summit.
