Australia regresses in the fight against emissions

The Australian prime minister suspended a reform that proposed the reduction of emissions by 2030. Australian authorities say that the commitments made in the Paris Agreement will not be abandoned, although they recognize that it will be difficult to reach the targets.

Servindi, 22 August, 2018.- Australia has been since the beginning of negotiations for the Paris Agreement in 2014 in Lima, an important player in the debate on environmental objectives. However, the largest country in Oceania would have lost a legal battle in the field of combating greenhouse gases after the legislation that would regulate this problem was suspended.

This after Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Trunbull announced the suspension of a group of projects that sought to regulate and reduce the dependence on coal that has the Australian population. The decision is due to a tough political crisis facing the governor of this country and the little support he had in Parliament.

"Our majority in Parliament is one seat and the exceptional reserves of some of our colleagues mean, as the case may be, that we can not take the law forward. Our energy policy is maintained", asserted Malcolm Trunbull who said he hopes to re-present the project when it has better political conditions.

The current prime minister of Australia faces a political crisis due to his decision to reduce the price of electricity, this within the framework of an energy reform established by the government of the oceanic country. The lack of parliamentary support caused that it restrained its reform in the stage destined to the reduction of polluting gases.

Political support

Amid a climate of discussions about the goals of the Paris Agreement, the Australian Government has been quick to ensure that this decision is not due to an intention of this country to abandon the commitments made in this pact. Although the Australian political authorities acknowledged that this decision will delay attempts to reduce polluting emissions by 2030.

It is necessary to remember that Australia is not only one of the 196 countries that signed the agreement in Paris in 2015, but that the oceanic country committed to meet the target of 26% reduction of gas emissions in relation to the values of the 2005 by 2030. This goal would be difficult to meet taking into account the current Australian political conditions.

The political crisis in Australia responds to a challenge from Interior Minister Peter Dutton against Malcolm Trunbull inside the Australian Liberal Party. This problem arose as a result of the energy reform proposed by the government and resulted in the loss of parliamentary support for the prime minister.
