UN seeks compliance with the Paris Agreement

UN for Climate expresses the urgency of implementing the goals of the Paris Agreement. Patricia Espinosa points out that the COP24 will be a key event to fulfill the goals in the field of the fight against climate change and global warming. For its part, Africa expresses its interest in embracing the global ecological fight agreements.

Servindi, November 9th, 2018.- A few weeks before the COP24 to be held in Katowice (Poland), the Executive Secretary of the United Nations for Climate, Patricia Espinosa has emphasized the need to implement the Paris Agreement. Signed in 2015, this year's convention is significant for the implementation of environmental commitments from 2020.

"The urgency of implementing this agreement has never been greater. We have no more time and cannot afford to have endless negotiations, "said Patricia Espinosa, who hopes that the Paris Agreement - signed by 195 countries in France three years ago - will begin to be applied.

The UN representative for Climate was concerned about the lack of consensus in the debate on the goal of global warming. Although the initial agreement established 2 ° Celsius as the objective, the scientific community in recent years has proven that this will not be enough and therefore promotes the goal to increase to 1.5 ° Celsius.

To this situation, we must add the skepticism of several countries that initially signed the treaty such as Japan and Australia who have shown less commitment to the goals of the Paris Agreement in recent years. The latter without forgetting that the United States withdrew from the agreement and Brazil threatens to do the same.

Global uncertainty

For the moment, there has not yet been a consensus in this area. This was demonstrated by the pre-COP24 meeting that took place a few days ago in Krakow (Poland) where the representatives of the countries affiliated to the Paris Agreement continued discussing the terms in which the pact is expected to be implemented.

Among the objectives of this agreement is to accelerate the energy transition towards renewable sources and invest in developing countries for projects to mitigate climate change. However, on this last point, there have been divergences in recent months due to the lack of support from some developed countries to deposit money in this objective called: Green Fund.

However, an encouraging position of solidarity with the Paris Agreement emerges from Africa. This was expressed by the secretary general of the Pan-African Alliance for Climate Justice (PAJCA, for its acronym in English), Mithika Mwenda.

"Our leaders, who hold the key to efficiently implement the Paris Agreement, must remain sincerely focused and resist attempts to disperse the unified African voice so that Africa loses its strong position in the design of the agreement regulation," said the African diplomat
