California is committed to having 100% of its clean energies

The California Senate approved a project that seeks to migrate 100% of the energy consumed by this state to renewable sources. All it takes is California Governor Jerry Brown to sign the document that is already in his office. In this way, it would become the second state in the United States to apply this decision.

Servindi, August 31, 2018.- Despite the anti-environmental policies adopted by Donald Trump’s administration from Washington, not everything is obscure in the ecological panorama of the United States. This week the California Senate approved the bill that would force the state to change 100% of its energy matrix towards renewable sources.

Now, the final approval of the law is in the hands of Californian Governor Jerry Brown, who has not yet expressed his personal position on this topic. The project seeks a moderate transition of energy sources in California, converting them to 60% renewable by 2030 and 100% renewable by 2045.

"It’s a real monumental time in California history, and maybe this will mark a turning point for the country," said Environment California director Dan Jacobson.

If the project is approved, California would become the second state in the United States to pass a law to migrate all its energy sources to a renewable matrix. The first state to make a decision like this was Hawaii.

Political decision

The project's author, Democratic Senator Kevin de León, was confident that the California governor, also a Democrat, will approve the law. In this way, California would become the North American state with the largest economy in initiating a process of migration towards renewable energy sources and in establishing a direct fight against emissions.

Currently California is already one of the states that has been introducing more aggressively renewable sources in its production. By 2017, 29% of its sources were renewable, with its main sources being hydropower, nuclear energy and gas, which is the main input for the generation of electricity in this state.

California, one of the political bastions of the Democratic Party and one of the most conscientious states in the fight against climate change, consolidates an authentic environmental policy despite the position of the White House since its Donald Trump administration began. Despite the opposition of the small conservative sector in California everything indicates that the project will be approved and that, sooner or later, this state will renew 100% of its energy sources.
